This is a prototype of aluminium base for sensor. I'm using it only for designing general shape of laminate, including diameter and location of holes in it. The Inkscape is not used (by me) to create copper routes. Width ot height must be measured as reference to proper scaling. Is there solution of it? Yes! I just took a picture of inner side of enclosure and outlined it using Inkscape. Remember situation(s) when holes in the measured enclosure don't fit to supports in such a enclosure (0.5 - 1mm inaccuracy). Sometimes is quite difficult to make measurements of it. Hard to say "professional" but just useful for hobbyist, fast and precise.Īnd so, usually universal enclosures have its internal dimensions and supports for mounting screws. Is worth to say that Inkscape is useful in this case too. It really worksīTW - regarding for pre-existing enclosures as you said.
We can do quite complex enclosures using CNC machine with Inkscape + CAM.

But we don't talk about professional approach. Yes, I know that if new enclosure is designed we can use clay modelling, use CADs for thousands dollars etc. All I need to do is just import this shape. The example shows two 2D components of round enclosure which will be will be transferred to CAM software to make 2.5D model. This is maybe not complex shape but I would like show you the way how I retrieve PCB's shape from enclosure project. Question is why? In my opinion the simplest way is just import this shape from already done enclosure project. But if you are taking measurements of complex shape you will spend some time doing this.

I couldn't find another free tool on the market which offers similar control. Using mentioned functionality of Inkscape, you can decide about contents of the exported DXFs for Eagle. On the other hand, the Eagle refuses most of curve types. You can easily convert these polylines to version using C command instead. used by me CAM software don't accept polylines containing A command (typically Beziers).

Inkscape gives you full control on curve types too - this is a key functionality to me. Projects done under Inkscape (SVGs) are read by CAM software as well as the Eagle (by the export to DXFs). I'm using it for designing 2.5D shapes of enclosures for devices and PCB shapes together. The Inkscape is free and advanced vector tool. Intention is to use this project for CNC machine cutting PCB and for Eagle to define shape borders for DRC module. If you need to create sophisticated shape of PCB suitable to the device enclosure you have to have this shape as vector project. Now convert all arcs to straight lines by Extensions -> Modify Path -> Flatten Beziers Ensure that your file has been downloaded and unzipped to use. Select all paths and then Extensions -> Modify Path -> Add Nodes. Add more vertices to approximate straight segments to arcs. All arcs must be replaced by straight segments. then it must be converted to path manually (Shift+Ctrl+C).Ĥ.
